What is Fibromyalgia (FM)? This is a complicated question with more than one answer. Literally, the term "fibromyalgia" refers to pain (myalgia) in the fibrous connective tissues (fibro) of the body, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. "Fibromyalgia" may be used as a generic term to refer to such pain. "Fibromyalgia" is also used to refer to a specific medical syndrome, Fibromyalgia Syndrome. The term "syndrome" refers to a set of recognizable patterns of symptoms which occur predictably together, but for which medicine has not discovered a direct cause or cure. The general medical community has only recently become aware of FM Syndrome, and has much to learn regarding its causes and treatment. Different specializations in the medical community categorize the syndrome in different ways; therefore it is common to find conflicting reports about the syndrome's potential causes and treatment recommendations. The only way to get a real understanding about the illness from a medical point of view is to read and analyze all of the varying theories regarding the condition, its history, etiology, manifestation, causes, and treatments. However, most people don't have the time or energy to keep up with all of the research and theories about FM, which is why we are here. We will provide you with the highlights of the main theories and research from some of the most trusted sources in the medical community. |
